Event 3: LASER and De-Colonizing AI

This past Thursday, I attended LASER: De-colonizing Artificial Intelligence which is a continuation of the LASER talks hosted by Stanford University and funded by the institution of Art, Science, and Technology. Today’s discussion was started off with a word from Satinder Gill, where she claims that the meeting was to establish the purpose of machine learning within society to bring about good. Karamjit Gill, furthers the discussion about general concepts of AI and machine learning. He states that although the machine brings about magical benefits and developments, it also brings about ethical debates about to what extent AI should be used and who should have access to this type of power.

The mic was then handed to Amir Baradaran who states that before we really integrate AI into our society, we need to map out the ecosystem of AI, as AI has already invaded the ecosystem of everyday life. We must navigate AI so we can properly implement it into society. This is for the purpose of being aware and conscious of the areas where we allow AI to penetrate itself.

Baradaran, as the major host of the event, takes on heavy topics of art and science. He claims that art was never really brought into the discussion of AI, yet he states that art is necessary to be integrated into its governance for proper utilization. The role of artists must also be accounted for in the future of AI, artificial general intelligence, because its future lies in the role of creativity. Self-awareness and creativity are two main components of the artistic world, context is key. This is why he claims artists need to be part of the discussion and solution for the proper incorporation of integration of AI into society.
